Newborn Puppy Rescue Kit
This Kit was constructed by Myra Savant Harris RN, author of Puppy Intensive Care, Canine Reproduction and Whelping, and Advanced Canine Repro and Puppy Care. These are the bibles that no breeder should be without and they have become invaluable in my own nursery. This Kit contains many of the critical items that that Mrs. Harris found to be instrumental in providing care for your newborn puppies and dam.
When puppies aspirate fluids or are not breathing well, a DeeLee catheter makes it simple to remove fluids by inserting the tube into the puppy’s throat and sucking on the secondary tube to pull fluids out. These work much better than the old-style bulb syringes on small neonates.
Equipment needed to tube feed and administer IV fluids are provided in the Kit to help puppies that are struggling and/or fading. This is very helpful to those that do not yet have a sucking reflex or are not receiving adequate hydration through natural nursing. A large bag of IV fluids is included along with syringes and instructions for administration. Lactated ringers is used for the treatment of dehydration and electrolyte depletion in animals, and can be administered using the included syringes under the skin (subcutaneously) in puppies.
Newborns often suffer from diarrhea which can quickly cause dehydration and system collapse. Included in the Kit is “Pink Stuff”, a popular and effective treatment that can stop diarrhea quickly. Administration of electrolytes (such as unflavored Pedialyte – not included in Kit) can help to restore electrolytes lost during bouts of diarrhea. "The Pink Stuff" Great for treating diarrhea in puppies and animals of all ages. Recommended dosages: For newborns, using 1/2 teaspoon, every 4 hours, given by swiping a small amount on the tongue every few minutes and allowing the puppy to swallow it all between swipes. Toys, 1 teaspoon every 4 hours. Larger breeds, 1-2 teaspoons every 4 hours Ingredients: Distilled water, guar gum, glycerin, kaolin, D-mannose, pectin and natural & artificial flavors.
A very common problem with new dams is slow milk let down. Sometimes breeders do not even realize that puppies may be starving when they appear to be nursing but there is actually little to no milk for them. The Kit includes a supply of Fenugreek, a “breeder’s secret” often used to aid in bringing milk in to those mothers whose milk is show in coming or in short supply. Fenugreek is often used by human moms and is well reviewed for this purpose.
Lastly, the Kit contains a Dewclaw Removal Kit for those who wish to remove dewclaws without exposing puppies to the hazards that may be present in a typical veterinary practice. Removal is simple, quick, and a link to an instructional video is provided to help you with the step-by-step process of removing dewclaws quickly and relatively painlessly. The surgical quality forceps also double to clamp umbilical cords during delivery, providing another use for this valuable Kit.
DeLee Suction Catheters – (2). To help clear fluids from esophagus on newborn puppies. Use: Insert small end into puppy’s throat, suck from flat end of second tube. This pulls mucous into the holding section of the catheter.
Feeding tubes – (4). For tube feeding infant puppies that do not have suck reflex or appear to be fading. Demonstration video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2sdSSmbDCw
Sterile IV Solution – 1/2 liter lactated ringers or sterile saline. Sterile IV fluids may be administered via included needle and syringe for puppies that are dehydrated. Discerning dehydration is typically done by gently pinching up the skin at the withers. If the skin is supple and returns to the body quickly is probably hydrated. If the skin stays up and feels dry, administration of IV fluids can often mean the difference between life and death. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azYzKIzwz-I
Pink Stuff – by Next Generation. 80 ml (2.7 ounces) dosing tube for pets. Anti-diarrheal paste. Safe for infants. Ingredients listed above.
Dosing: Newborns ½ tsp, Adult toys 1 tsp, Larger Breeds 1-2 tsp. Every 4 hours.
Syringes – (3) 10cc slip tip and (3) 20cc slip tip. Used for administration of IV fluids using enclosed needles or use with enclosed feeding tubes.
Needles – (5) 23 gauge, ¾” needles. Can be used with syringes for administration of IV fluids.
Fenugreek – 100 capsules. 610mg/cap. Known to bring in milk and increase milk production due to its properties similar to estrogen.
Dosing: 1 to 3 capsules by mouth 3 times per day. Can be given in food or made into a tea. Breeders often give fenugreek until the bitch smells like maple syrup and then back off dosing.

The components of this Kit represent a significant savings over the cost of the individual items purchased individually, and instructional video links produced by Mrs. Harris will help you to understand how to use the Kit and feel comfortable saving your puppies at home in your own nursery.
We recommend that you also consider purchasing the complete set of books written by Mrs. Harris for your library to compliment this Puppy Rescue Kit. The books are written in friendly, non-technical terms from a long-time breeder of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Registered Nurse with decades of experience as a labor and delivery/neonatal care nurse.
