Homeopathy For Breeders—The Basics

Introduction

I hate to admit that I've now spent over five decades of nights lying on a whelping box floor. I have had many situations where I knew I needed medicine to help with labor. But I wasn’t comfortable using pharmaceuticals or even herbs or plant medicine. Knowing how dangerous oxytocin can be, I often felt helpless when labor wasn't progressing or when I knew how much my girl was hurting. Until I became familiar with homeopathic medicines, I either avoided conventional allopathic medicines altogether or took my chances and used them—all the while praying that my girl’s uterus wouldn’t split or that newborns wouldn’t be damaged by them. I am now a full-fledged “holistic” or “natural rearing” breeder. This means that I avoid the use of toxins, chemicals and medicines that could potentially harm my babies.

Homeopathics in Bottles

Once I became comfortable with using homeopathic remedies, I felt that my prayers had been answered. I could support my girl throughout pregnancy without the use of harmful pharmaceuticals with long lists of potential side effects. I could also make her labor comfortable and productive by having remedies on hand that were completely safe to use. Even when I was a newbie and felt unsure of which remedy to use in every situation, I knew that I could make a mistake in my choice without risking harm to my dam or her babies.

As I gained more experience with homeopathy, it became my medical system of choice as a breeder. Homeopathic medicines have long been used in human birthing, but there was very little information available on their use in dogs and cats. I spent many years feeling my way through these remedies, trying them, observing the results, and documenting how best to use them. I hope that through this article and the workshops I have produced, you will also feel safe and secure in using this medical system that has been long ignored in my own country of the United States but is widely used in the rest of the world.

Welcome to the world of breeding using homeopathy!

How Homeopathy Differs from Conventional Medicine

Homeopathy and conventional medicine approach healing quite differently. In homeopathy, symptoms aren’t seen as problems to suppress but as the body’s natural way of restoring balance. So, rather than shutting symptoms down, homeopathic remedies support the body's natural healing process.

Then there’s the safety factor, especially for pregnancy, birthing, and nursing offspring. While conventional medicine often relies on antibiotics, a casual “just in case” dose of Amoxicillin during pregnancy can wreak havoc on a dog's gut microbiome. This is a system with trillions of microscopic living organisms. It is also inherited by puppies and kittens through their mother. Disrupt it, and you might end up with a litter prone to itching, yeast issues, and lifelong gut dysfunction. Rebalancing a microbiome is tough, so we advise avoiding unnecessary pharmaceuticals during pregnancy.

Luckily, homeopathic antibiotics offer a safe alternative. Imagine your pregnant dog developing a urinary tract infection—normally, a tricky situation. But with remedies like homeopathic Cantharis or Narayani War, you can treat it effectively without the risks. Wouldn’t that be a huge gain for you as a breeder?

Looking back, I remember being told I couldn’t even take aspirin when I was pregnant—cold, flu, whatever, I had to tough it out. If only I'd known about homeopathy!

With homeopathy, pregnancy could have been smoother, labor pains eased, swelling reduced, bleeding controlled, eclampsia prevented, and neonates supported after birth. Now we have safe remedies to help our girls in the same way we would help a human. They can even help mothers and newborns with parasite control, diarrhea, and the dreaded Fading Puppy Syndrome.

Most homeopathic remedies have no expiration date when stored properly. How often have you reached for a medicine to give to your girl and found it expired?  Homeopathy isn’t just an alternative; it’s a game-changer for breeders.

And with over 200 years of clinical observation and thousands of studies supporting homeopathy’s effectiveness—including more than 1,100 recent papers in medical journals—it’s clear this system isn’t going anywhere.

How Homeopathics are Made

There are thousands of homeopathic remedies available. They are made using a simple yet fascinating process. Pharmacies start with raw materials known to cause specific symptoms in their natural state. But don’t worry! Through extreme dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking), the original substance is completely removed, leaving only its energy signature (think of it like a quantum imprint). This transformation creates a powerful, yet totally safe medicine.

A great example? Homeopathic onion. While chopping a fresh onion can make your eyes water and nose run, a homeopathic remedy made from onion helps the body heal similar cold and hay fever symptoms—minus the drowsiness and side effects of conventional treatments.

Homeopathy isn’t just about dilution; succussion (vigorous shaking with impacts) is the magic touch that gives remedies their healing power. This process is often performed by machines to ensure consistency. Once complete, the medicine is either kept in liquid form or sprayed on sugar-based pellets or tablets. Homeopathics also come in creams, pastes, and other mediums, offering versatility in how they’re used.

If you want a deeper understanding of the manufacturing process, Boiron, a trusted homeopathic pharmacy founded in France 90 years ago, has a great video showing the process in action. There is even have a shorter video if you're pressed for time.

Homeopathic Dosing

Frequency and Dosing

Dosing frequency depends on potency—lower potencies are given more often, higher ones less frequently. In acute situations, dosing can be more frequent. Always follow the label or a healthcare professional’s guidance.

Potencies

In homeopathy, stronger potency means greater dilution—the opposite of conventional medicine! The typical potencies used for normal first aid are 30C. A remedy at 200C or 1M is more potent than a lower-strength dilution.

Dosing Pets with Homeopathic Remedies

Unlike conventional medicine, homeopathic remedies aren’t based on body weight. Instead, they work by transferring information through mucous membranes (mouth, vagina, etc.), meaning even the tiniest dose is effective. A pellet or drop just needs to make wet contact. It doesn’t even need to be swallowed. Pellets are coated with medicine, not soaked through, so giving a few ensures proper transfer. In general, I like to remember this adage “same dose for an elephant as for an ant.”

You also need not worry about overdosing with homeopathy. I once lost an entire bottle of a worming remedy to a curious puppy. All that happened was that I had to replace the remedy bottle with a new one. I didn’t need to worry that she would need her stomach pumped due to an overdose of medication.

All of our homeopathic products include canine-specific instructions you won't get anywhere else. And to help you cultivate a deeper understanding of homeopathics, we have created video workshops to help you learn more about the use of homeopathics. Introduction to Homeopathy

Homeopathy for Breeders and Pet Parents

Now that you understand the basics of homeopathic medicine, let’s dive into our birthing kit for use during whelping or queening.

Homeopathic Birthing Kit

The Dog Breeder Store’s Homeopathic Birthing Kit contains ten of the most critical remedies needed before, during, and after the animal birth process. These remedies are custom made by a licensed pharmacy. While labeled for use with animals, they are made in a licensed pharmacy using the same methods as for human remedies. You can even use some of these for yourself. (Especially the one for exhaustion during whelping!)

Our kit comes with single remedies and homeopathic Narayani blends to support you and your girl throughout the entire birthing process! Keep the dosing information above in mind. We use higher potency remedies in our kit. Those don’t require dosing as often as 30C potencies; thus, we sometimes need only one dose for effect. Dosing instructions are included with the kit.

Keep the above dosing information in mind. We use higher potency remedies in our kit. Those don’t require dosing as often as 30C potencies; thus, we sometimes need only one dose for effect. Dosing instructions are included with the kit.
