Dehydration is one of the biggest reasons for neonatal death and illness in new moms. Often moms just won't drink or eat well after giving birth. It's really important to keep checking hydration levels (pinch up skin on neck and check for suppleness). Watch her fluid intake and be sure she is drinking often. You may need to put the water right under her nose and encourage her to drink, or use one of our oral syringes to get fluids into her orally.
The 3 biggest factors in fading puppy loss are dehydration, loss of electrolytes, low glucose levels, low oxygen levels, and low body temperature. Congenital birth defects can also be a factor, but the ones listed above are simple to fix in your own nursery.
If your puppies do not appear to be vital (verging on lifeless), you must act immediately. Be sure they are warm, hydrated, and have been eating well. Use our Intensive Care Unit for puppies who are critical. This can save a life!

Choice 2 - Lactated Ringers choices are various sizes of sterile lactated ringers, USP without dextrose. Lactated Ringer's comes in a bag and is a sterile, nonpyrogenic solution containing isotonic concentrations of electrolytes in water for injection.
Choice 3 - Normosol-R (pH 7.4) is a sterile, nonpyrogenic, isotonic solution of balanced electrolytes in water for injection. It’s administered by intravenous infusion to replace acute extracellular fluid volume losses in various scenarios, including surgery, trauma, burns, or shock. Additionally, it can be used as an adjunct to restore circulatory volume in patients with moderate blood loss. Basically some veterinarians prefer Normosol-R because it's a little easier on the liver than the lactate in lactated ringers. However, consult your veterinarian for more detailed information.
Ringers and Normosol-R are to be used under the supervision of a veterinarian. They do not come with IV administration set, as IV's are to be administered only by licensed medical professionals. You can draw from the bag using a sterile needle and syringe (not included), or use an IV port/tube and needle to place the hydration at the neck under the skin.
