The Most Dangerous Time of Day for a
Nursing Dam

It's six in the morning. You've been up most of the night.
The puppies are nursing, she's been lying quietly in the box, and you finally
let yourself doze off in the chair. You wake up an hour later and she's not in
the box. She's standing in the middle of the room, panting softly, staring at
the wall.
That moment — right there — is what I call the Morning Watch.
And in over fifty years of breeding, I've learned that it's the single most
dangerous time of day for a nursing dam.
Not week one versus week four. Not the first twelve hours
after whelping. The most dangerous window, the one that catches experienced
breeders off guard, is the early morning — and almost nobody talks about it.

What's Happening While You Sleep
Think about what your dog has been doing all night. She's been
nursing — continuously, or near enough. Every time a puppy latches on, calcium
is leaving her body in her milk. By the time you wake up at 6 a.m., she may
have been nursing for six or eight hours straight without eating anything.
Her blood calcium is at its lowest point of the day.[i]
She hasn't eaten. Her overnight fast means no dietary calcium
coming in. The puppies have been pulling calcium out of her blood steadily all
night. Her body has been doing everything it can to keep up — pulling calcium
from her bones, her regulatory system working hard — but by morning, that
system may be running on empty.
This is when pre-eclampsia strikes. Not dramatically, not with
obvious seizures. Quietly. A dog standing somewhere she shouldn't be, looking
slightly lost, panting just a little more than she was yesterday.

? The Math
Behind the Morning Risk A nursing dam produces roughly 1-2 mL
of milk per gram of puppy per day. A litter of six four-week-old puppies
might weigh 3 lbs (1.4 kg) each — that's over 12 lbs of puppy nursing from
one dog. The calcium going out in that milk is continuous. Six to eight hours
of overnight nursing without food intake is a meaningful physiological event,
not just a tired dog. |
What to
Look For Before Your First Cup of Coffee
I do this every single morning during the nursing period
without exception. It takes about ninety seconds. It has saved dogs' lives.
Before you do anything else — before you make coffee, before
you check your phone — you walk to the whelping box and you do this check:

None of these signs alone is a diagnosis. But any one of them,
in a nursing dam who was fine last night, is a reason to act. You give her a
dose of calcium. You watch her for thirty minutes. You call your vet if she
isn't improving.
That's it. Ninety seconds of observation, one dose of calcium
paste, thirty minutes of watching. That is the difference between a crisis
managed at home and a midnight run to the emergency vet.
The Look
in Her Eyes
This one I want to spend a moment on, because it's the hardest
to describe and the most important to recognize.
You know your dog. You know how she looks at you. There's a
particular quality to a hypocalcemic dog's gaze that I can only describe as
vacant — like the lights are on but dimmer than usual. She's looking at you but
not quite landing on you. She seems confused about where she is, or what she's
supposed to be doing. She may wander a step or two and then stop, uncertain.
In fifty years I've seen this look dozens of times. It
precedes panting, stiffness, and tremors. It is the earliest sign of all, and
it's the one most often dismissed as tiredness.
It's not tiredness. It's her nervous system beginning to
misfire because her blood calcium is too low.i
When you see that look, give
her calcium right now. Not after breakfast. Not after you've thought
about it for a few minutes. Right now.
What to
Give Her
First thing in the morning, before she's eaten anything, is
actually one of the best moments to give calcium because she has an empty
stomach and you can use either form — carbonate with a small amount of food, or
citrate and paste without food.
My preference first thing in the morning is the Whelping
Paste, directly into the cheek pouch. It's fast, it's absorbed without food,
and it's easy to do while she's still groggy and cooperative. By the time she's
eaten breakfast and the puppies have nursed again, the paste is already
working.

Morning Dose — What We Give Whelping Paste: 2.5 cc for dogs
under 25 lb / 5 cc for 25-60 lb / 7.5 cc for dogs over 60 lb. Directly into
the cheek pouch before breakfast. If you don't have paste: one Tums Extra
Strength (300 mg elemental calcium) crushed into a small spoonful of plain
yogurt or canned food. Get something in her before the puppies nurse again. Then: feed her
breakfast before the puppies go back on. Food before nursing, not after. Give
her body something to work with. |
After she's eaten and the puppies have nursed, do the check
again. Is she settling? Are her eyes clearer? Is she lying down comfortably?
Good. Continue with your regular daily dosing schedule.
If she's not settling — if she's still panting, still avoiding
the box, still moving stiffly thirty minutes after calcium — call your vet.
Don't wait another hour to see if she comes around. Thirty minutes is your
window.
A Few
Things That Catch Breeders Off Guard
She Was
Fine Last Night
Yes. She was. That's exactly the point. A dog can look
perfectly normal at ten o'clock at night and be in early pre-eclampsia by six
in the morning, because six to eight hours of nursing without food is enough to
drop blood calcium significantly in a high-producing dam. Don't let last
night's normal fool you into complacency this morning.
The
Puppies Are Four Weeks Old
I've read about eclampsia at nine weeks postpartum.[ii]
The puppies were eating solid food. She still crashed. As long as she is
producing any milk and those puppies are nursing even occasionally, she is
losing calcium. The morning check doesn't stop at week four. It stops the day
nursing stops completely.
She Just
Seems Tired
Tired dogs sleep. Tired dogs nurse lying down and don't move
much. A dog who is standing in the middle of the room at six in the morning,
panting softly, looking vaguely confused — that's not tired. That's a dog
asking you for help.
She Ate
Fine Yesterday
Eating well during the day does not protect her from a calcium
drop overnight. The overnight nursing load, without any dietary calcium coming
in, can overcome a good feeding day. Check her every morning regardless of how
well she ate the day before.
The Vet
Says Her Bloodwork is Normal for Calcium Levels
If you do take her to the vet and they run bloodwork — here's
something you need to know. Some vets miss early eclampsia, even when the signs
are in front of them.
One thing I want every breeder to understand is this: a dam
can be in early or mid-stage eclampsia even when her blood calcium looks
“normal.” This is where a lot of well-meaning veterinarians get tripped up.
They run a quick total calcium test, see a number in the normal range, and
conclude that calcium isn’t the problem. Meanwhile, the dam is pacing, glassy-eyed,
trembling, rejecting her puppies, or coming out of a C-section acting “off” in
a way that every experienced breeder recognizes instantly.
Here’s the truth: total serum calcium often stays normal
until the crisis is advanced. The body will do absolutely everything it can
to keep blood calcium stable because the heart and diaphragm depend on it. A
dog can be neurologically crashing while her total calcium still looks fine on
paper. What actually drops first is ionized calcium — the biologically
active form — and most ER clinics don’t run that test unless they’re
specifically looking for it.
Veterinary literature is very clear on this point: clinical
signs matter more than a normal total calcium value in the early stages of
eclampsia. The Merck Veterinary Manual notes that eclampsia is diagnosed by
low calcium or by characteristic neurologic signs, and that treatment
decisions depend on the severity of symptoms, not just lab numbers[iii].
This is why I tell breeders to trust what they’re seeing. If
your dam is showing the signs — the pacing, the stiffness, the frantic
behavior, the sudden rejection of puppies — you act. You don’t wait for a
number on a machine to catch up to what her body is already telling you.

The Morning Watch — Tear-Out Checklist Do this every morning before
anything else: - Eyes: Clear and focused, or vague and
vacant? - Location: In the box with puppies, or
somewhere she shouldn't be? - Gait: Walk her a few steps. Fluid, or
stiff and wooden? - Panting: Present? More than
yesterday? - Puppies: Lying down to nurse
willingly, or avoiding them? - Food: Normal interest, or refusing? If anything is off: Give calcium immediately (paste into
cheek pouch, or Tums crushed into a small amount of food). Feed her before the puppies go back on. Watch for 30 minutes. Improving? Keep
going. Not improving? Call your vet. Continue the Morning Watch
through the last day of nursing. |
A Final
Note
I developed the Morning Watch the hard way — by being the
breeder on the phone at seven in the morning with someone whose dog had been
standing in the kitchen since five, and she'd assumed she was just restless
after a long night. By the time she called me, the dog was tremoring.
You don't have to learn it that way. Ninety seconds every
morning. That's all I'm asking.
The dogs who make it through eight or nine weeks of nursing
without a crisis aren't the lucky ones. They're the ones whose breeders checked
them every morning.
