Many breeders routinely "worm" their puppies with toxic systemic chemicals, sometimes without knowing for certain that the puppies even have parasites. After years of studying naturopathy in animals, looking at fecal specimens through our nursery microscope, we are convinced that these chemical wormers are not only contributing to parasite resistance, but also can harm and kill neonates. We have seen supposedly safe wormers that we were taught to use routinely decades ago actually cause great harm and even death to young puppies.
Parasites are not always a bad thing. In fact, some parasites actually help to cleanse heavy metals from the system. It's when the population gets high enough to cause detrimental symptoms that we need to add supports into the puppy's system. I urge breeders not to just routinely worm puppies without having a definite diagnosis. Ask how many eggs were on the slide; don't just get a "your puppies have worms" diagnosis. A low population is nothing to worry about, as a puppy with a growing and strong immune system is able to lower the population and kill them off slowly to a point where they are not causing symptoms.
Puppies were never meant to be poisoned as babies just to be able to check off on a health card that they were "wormed". Many of these chemicals can cause lifelong immune system issues, as we now know from current research.
When we see parasites on a fecal, we judge if there are symptoms associated with them that are a problem. We also actually scan the slide to judge whether the population is small or overloaded to the point of causing distress.
We like to start putting food grade diatomaceous earth into puppy gruel if we know that parasites may be an issue. This is a natural way to help keep populations low. We also like to use ParaGize a couple of times on each baby's belly to support their natural cleansing abilities. Over and over again, we have seen the populations slowly decrease using this protocol, naturally and safely.
