“The Annie Box” SO MUCH MORE THAN A HOTBOX
A
portable, warm and safe environment that is easy to set and keep clean.
Losing
newborns can be the most heartbreaking thing that any breeder experiences. Over
our decades in breeding, we’ve learned the hard way that having the right equipment
ready ahead of time is the key. We have developed a reputation for being able
to whelp live puppies and keep them alive. Many local breeders reach out for
our help when they have fading or critical babies. Often we are able to save
them because we have the knowledge and equipment needed to do so.
We
love our veterinarians, but an emergency room is not typically the best place
to take critical neonates. We’ve found that keeping them in the loving care of
a breeder’s nursery increases their chances of survival by a huge margin. But
knowledge goes along with preparation. Having the right equipment has saved so
many lives, so much money, and most importantly, so much heartache.
Why
this box? In years past, we have used cardboard boxes, makeshift plastic intensive
care units, and did our best to keep our babies at home. Sometimes babies have
crawled out of the DIY box! None of them were really portable in the event that
we had to transport our babies.
This
is the year that we wanted to review all the choices for intensive care units
to choose the best; not only for our own puppy nursery, but for our customers. Wow,
did we find some unusual offerings on the market. Converted glass aquariums that we were pretty
certain our moms would break in a hot minute.
Converted coolers that didn’t allow us to see our sick babies. Uh no.
Intensive care units that were spectacular but not portable. After reviewing all the options, talking with
lots of breeders who have tried them all… we chose to bring in an innovative
intensive care unit to raise our 2020 litter with. Wow, was it the right choice!
Just
after we brought it in and set it up, our boxer Spice had to go in for a
C-Section. Her puppies went straight
from the surgery table and into The Annie Box. Our repro vet was thoroughly
impressed. We had 360 degree visibility and heat for transportation, so it acted
as a hot box. When we got them home, we hooked up our oxygen concentrator to
it, and set up the nebulizer. We were using it as a holding box while doing
various nursery duties, and loving how secure the babies were. With oxygen set
at around 1 to 1½ lpm, they settled right down and slept soundly, never making
a sound to disturb mom while we cleaned, weighed, and did our puppy duties.
Shortly
afterwards, we used The Annie Box for a baby chick who was not thriving. The
box worked beautifully, allowing us to nebulize HOCL in rotation
with Thieves while providing the warmth and oxygen needed. We were also able to
use the Annie Box to transport another chick into our little flock of babies
while the weather was cold and rainy outside.
Then
the worst happened. A friend called with puppies who were extremely ill. Mom was
septic (ended up with pyometra and emergency surgery.) Unfortunately, one baby passed
on the way to my house. The box was called into action to stabilize the remaining
baby. He was purple, very dehydrated, and barely breathing. Within an hour, he
was pink, full of Immunity
Formula by tube
feeding, hydrated,
had Fresh
Frozen Plasma, nebulizer treatments, and started twitching. I was super
impressed with the performance of this box. I didn’t have to open the top to
check on the baby. I could see the baby from all directions as I moved about
the room.
The
Annie Box is more than a hot box. It saves lives.
